Mistral AI's copyright policy

As encouraged by Measure 1.1.2. of the Code of Practice for General-Purpose AI (the “Code of Practice”), Mistral AI makes publicly available the following high-level summary of Mistral AI’s copyright policy:

1. Web-scraping. Should Mistral AI use web-crawlers or have such web-crawlers used on its behalf:

  • Mistral AI will not bypass technological measures that prevent or restrict access to or use of copyright-protected data such as technological denial, restriction of access imposed by subscription models or paywalls.
  • Mistral AI will exclude from web-crawling the piracy websites listed on the EU Commission's piracy watchlist dated 22 May 2025. If the Commission or the AI Office publishes a new list, Mistral AI will implement any such new list.
  • Mistral AI will only employ web-crawlers that read and follow instructions expressed in accordance with the Robot Exclusion Protocol (robots.txt).
  • Mistral AI will publish information about the web crawlers used (if any) and their robots.txt features on its AI Compliance Hub.
  • Mistral AI will update its copyright policy from time to time to reflect evolving industry standards regarding the machine-readable rights reservation methods that comply with the criteria set forth in the Code of Practice.

2. Search engine feature. Mistral AI ensures that the reservation of rights does not impact the web-search feature that qualifies as a search engine under Article 3, point (j), of Regulation (EU) 2022/2065.

3. Mitigate the risks of copyright infringing outputs.

  • Mistral AI implements technical measures to prevent its models from generating copyright-infringing outputs.
  • Mistral AI prohibits copyright-infringing uses of its models in its contractual documents, including in its Terms of Service and Usage Policy.
  • Mistral AI will implement a provision in the README file of its open-source models to prohibit copyright-infringing uses of such models.

4. Rightholders and complaints management. Rightholders can lodge a complaint at any time by using the Lodge a Complaint Form. Mistral AI has designated a point of contact and implemented an internal process to address any such complaints.
